o-sponsored by the Ameson Foundation and the Zhejiang Society of Education of the Education Department of Zhejiang Province, the International Forum on Educational Leadership and Equality was held on Nov. 3, 2009, in the SSAW Hotel in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province. The forum was organized by Education Bureau of Xiacheng District, Hangzhou Municipality.
American education dignitaries, including Mr. Ramon Cortines, the Superintendent of the Los Angeles Unified School District; Professor Fernando M. Reimers, the Ford Foundation Professor of International Education and Director of Global Education and of International Education Policy at Harvard University; Dr. George Entwistle, the Superintendent of Schools of Belmont in Boston, Massachusets; and Dr. Michael Harvey, Principal of Belmont High School; were led by Professor Sean Zhang, Deputy Chairman of the Ameson Foundation, to participate in the forum. The visiting experts delivered speeches on cultivating educational leadership, expanding educational opportunity and school and principal development.
More than 20 governmental officials, scholars and school principals from Zhejiang Province attended the forum. Ms. Zhang Hongwu, deputy chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) of Xiacheng District, Hangzhou Municipality warmly welcomed the American education experts by delivering a speech on “harmonious education”. She commented that this forum contributes in broadening an educational vision particularly during the “China Hangzhou International Conference on Educational Innovations.”
Mr. Zhang Xupei, Deputy General Director of Zhejiang Provincial Department of Education, shared his opinion on educational equality and school principal’s leadership. He exchanged ideas with the visiting experts about building a better relationship between the school and community, parents and school. Mr. Zhou Peizhi, Director of Education Bureau, Xiacheng District, Hangzhou Municipality, brought with him case studies in schools of Xiacheng District, and compared educational principle proposed by Confucius and the UNESCO. Director of Education Bureaus in Hangzhou, Quzhou, Huzhou and Shaoxing Municipality also attended the forum.
In addition to the speeches and seminars, the American dignitaries also visited Hangzhou No. 2 High School and Hangzhou Normal University.
